Dangers of Thunderstorms
10/7/2020 (Permalink)
Thunderstorms are rain showers in which lightning occurs; thunder comes from the lightning.
Thunderstorms usually happen in the spring and summer during afternoon and evening hours, but they can occur all year long and at all hours.
A severe thunderstorm includes hail and/or wind gusting in excess of 57.5 mph (50 knots). Under the right conditions, thunderstorms can cause flash flooding. The lightning can cause fires and fatalities. Large hail (golf ball or softball size) can damage cars, windows and kill animals caught outside. Strong winds can knock down power lines and trees. Mobile homes can be knocked over as well.
