When Winter Storms Occur
11/10/2020 (Permalink)
Winter storms and blizzards can bring extreme cold, freezing rain, snow, ice and/or high winds.
Winter storms can last a few hours or several days. They can knock out heat, power and communication services and close roads.
If a winter storm warning occurs:
- Listen for emergency information and alerts
- Stay off roads if at all possible. If you get trapped in your car, stay put until help arrives.
- Limit time outdoors, stay inside and dress warmly.
- Prepare for power outages by having extra batteries for radios and flashlights.
- Avoid carbon monoxide poisoning by using generators outside only and away from windows.
- Never use a gas oven or stove to heat your home.
- Avoid overexertion when shoveling snow, which could lead to a heart attack.
