Causes of Toilet Leaks

11/24/2020 (Permalink)

Toilet leaks are caused by a variety of reasons.

A toilet tank can loosen over time. Tanks should fit tightly onto the seat. If you notice water seeping out at the base of the tank it could be from a loose tank.

The wax ring at the base of the toilet can dry out or get damaged causing the seal to be broken. If you notice water coming from the base of the toilet, this could be the cause.

The bolts that hold the toilet to the floor can also loosen over time. If water “pools” at the base of the toilet when you flush, it could be coming from the bolts not been tight enough. You can fix this problem by tightening the bolts but be careful not to overtighten them as this can lead to cracks in the toilet.

A damaged flange can also be the cause of a leaking toilet. If it is damaged, it requires replacing the whole flange or filling in the missing piece.

A leaking toilet should be fixed as soon as possible to avoid further damage to the flooring and subfloor.
