Fire Extinguishers and Fire Alarms:
Most codes require access to fire extinguishers so that no one should travel less than 75 feet to get to a fire extinguisher in order to put out a small fire. Multipurpose fire extinguishers come in different classes. Those rated A, B and C or combination of these classes (A-B or A-B-C) are capable of putting out small fires involving paper, wood, gases and oils. Make sure that your employees or tenants know how to operate the fire extinguisher.
Fire alarms are a first line of defense against potential fires. A fire alarm alerts lets everyone in the building know that a potential danger exists. Immediate evacuation should follow when an alarm sounds. If a false alarm should occur, it should be recognized as a confirmation that the system works and that the employees/tenants should take it seriously the next time an alarm goes off.
Regular Inspections of both fire extinguishers and fire alarms should be done on at least a yearly basis.
