Damaging Winds

Damaging winds are called “straight-line” winds so as not to confuse the damage they cause with tornado damage. Damage from severe thunderstorm winds is more common than damage from tornadoes. Damaging winds are classified as those exceeding 50-60mph. Wind speeds can reach up to 100mph and can produce damage extending for hundreds of miles.
Since most thunderstorms produce some straight-line winds, anyone living in thunderstorm prone areas is at a risk for experiencing wind damage. People living in mobile homes are especially at risk from injury. Even mobile homes that have been anchored can be severely damaged by high wind gusts.
Wind damage can topple trees and send other outdoor items (chairs, grills, etc.) into the side of your home or outbuilding. The resulting damage could allow water from the thunderstorm to get into the structure causing even more damage to your home or outbuilding.
