Preparing for a Power Outage Before a Storm Hits

10/5/2021 (Permalink)

Power outages can be a result of severe storms and it helps to be prepared. A power outage can be from several hours to several days or longer.

Preparations include:

  • Signing up for local alerts and monitoring weather reports when severe weather is expected.
  • Make a list of items that rely on electricity, plan to have batteries on hand as well as cell phones and other items charged.
  • Have flashlights or led battery powered candles on hand for light sources.
  • Have gas tanks full and additional gas on hand for portable generators and to use for grills to cook on.
  • Stock up on non-perishable food and water.
  • If taking any type of refrigerated medicines, check with your medical provider to get specific guidance on life saving medicine and ask how long medication can be stored at higher temperatures before causing any issues. Keep a thermometer in your refrigerator and freezer so that you know what the temperature is when the power comes back on.
